Background History

Superwood Sawmill (S) Sdn Bhd was incorporated in year 1979 by a group of shareholders from Melaka and Singapore, and the mill is situated at Kampung Narawang, Ranau, which is around 90km from Kota Kinabalu city centre; the sawmill with access to it’s own timber concessions was capable to produce various species of timber notably, White Seraya (Meranti), Red Seraya, Keruing, Kapur, Selangan Batu, Bintangor, Agathis and other non-commercialised species. The monthly capacity during those years was around 4,000 m3 of good quality sawntimber, and the main exporting countries were Japan, Korea, USA, Middle East, and Europe.

During the Asia economic downturn in year 1988, the management made a risky decision to invest into the downstream wood processing business, then, Superwood Industries Sdn Bhd was found; the main reason behind was through the encouragement of the Sabah Government and also the continuity of the business. During the beginning, this processing plant has a range of machineries from Europe, which consists of moulders, gangrip saw, fingerjoint machine, sanding machine, bandresaw and grinders for the well equipped tool room; activities involved are pressure immunization treatment, timber kiln-drying, simple moulding, and solid door production with various Tropical rainforest species.

Another important diversification decision is made by the management during the World economic crisis in year 1998; an area of 2000 acres oil palm plantation is set up under the subsidiary, named Syarikat Sinar Wanita Sdn Bhd.
